France School Phone Ban: The 2018 Law and the Pause Numérique

The 2018 law

France's law of 3 August 2018 bans mobile phone use by pupils in écoles and collèges, making it the earliest national school phone ban in Europe and still the reference point for other countries. The law leaves the practical enforcement to each school.

From rule to routine

From 2024, France trialled a "pause numérique" requiring collège pupils to hand in or seal phones on arrival, with ministers signalling a wider rollout. This is exactly the use case lockable pouches were designed for: students seal their phone on arrival and keep it in their own bag, with no central storage to manage.

How schools enforce it

Hand-in counters create bottlenecks at the start and end of the day and raise loss and dispute risks. Pouches remove the counter entirely. The method is fast enough for large collèges and removes the confrontational aspect of confiscation.

Beyond schools

The pause numérique trials have shown that a physical barrier, not just a rule, is what makes a phone-free day stick. Schools that rely on goodwill alone find phones reappear at break and lunch.
