The Department for Education's 'Mobile phones in schools' publication is statutory guidance for schools and trusts in England. Schools should be mobile phone-free by default, with the prohibition covering lessons, the time between lessons, breaktime and lunchtime. Headteachers still choose the method — the guidance names lockers and hand-in as examples — and the policy must be published to pupils and parents.

East Lothian bans phones in all classrooms, pouches from October

East Lothian councillors approved a ban on phones in learning areas and corridors across all primary and secondary schools. Secondary pupils must place devices in pouches during lessons from October; P1–P3 pupils may not bring phones at all, and older primary pupils use a lock box. Phones stay allowed in designated social spaces at break and lunch. The council's consultation found 98% of secondary pupils own and bring a phone to school, and over 80% say they never or rarely use it in class.
